My 3 year old, Chevy is a momboob-a-holic.  He has always really loved nursing and nursed as much as a newborn, since he was a newborn.  After I had my 5th baby, I started tandem nursing for the first time.  It was hard at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.  Now that my youngest is almost 1 and Chevy has turned 3, I am really beginning to feel touched out.  I don’t get enough “me time” as it is, so to have them both crawling all over me at night really puts me on edge sometimes.

Chevy simply CANNOT go to sleep without momboob.  He will nurse until he falls asleep then if he wakes up in the middle of the night, he will try to get into my shirt.  If I try to tell him no, he will just cry and cry until I give in.  Of course, that would wake me up, irritate me and just make me wish I had weaned him sooner.

Then I came across the book by Lesli Mitchell, Sally Weans From Night Nursing.  I wanted to give it a shot since it’s usually the simple things that end up working, right?  I had Lesli send me a copy and Chevy was so excited when it arrived.  The first night, I read it to him 3 times in a row.  He loved the pictures showing Sally nursing.  To be more relevant to him, when I read it, I replaced the words “nursing” with “momboob”.  It was actually kind of funny, so I was giggling as I read it, making him more excited about it.

The first night didn’t go so well.  He woke up, I gave in, and he had his momboob.  The second night, we read the book twice and he was anxious for the sun to come up so he could have momboob.  He woke up in the middle of the night and I told him to remember the story.  He would need to go back to sleep and wait until the sun comes up.  I rubbed his back and to sleep he went!  Could it really be this simple?

By night 3, he was starting to nurse less during the DAY even, which was pretty awesome for me.  We sat down to read the book and he already had it about memorized.  He would finish sentences before I could spit them out so I started letting him fill in words as I read.  After we read the book 3 times again, he said, “Ok, one drink of momboob then I’ll have more when the sun comes up.”  He snuggled up under his blanket and smiled at me after nursing for a few minutes.  He went to change his mind and asked for momboob and I again reminded him of the book.  I rubbed his back and he closed his eyes with a big smile on his face.

Every night since has been free of middle of the night nursing and he is happier to take “not right now” for an answer when he asks to nurse.  Instead of yelling, screaming and throwing tantrums, he happily says, “Okay!” and runs off to play.  You can order Sally Weans From Night Nursing on Amazon or you can enter below for the chance to win a copy!
