What is Vaginal Steaming?


You’re going to do what to where? Umm okay…

I first heard about v-steaming as a frequent visitor to King Spa (Korean Spa) in Dallas. There it is called a wormwood steam sitz bath. I was never brave enough to try it in a public locker room so I put it out of my memory and honestly did not think of it again. Recently, I read an article on the benefits of V-Steaming. It is also referred to as Yoni Steaming or Vaginal Steaming. The article was enough to perk my interest. Within a few days I had searched the internet countless hours and read gobs of articles on the process. With a long list of female issues I figured “what could it hurt?” Historically v-steaming is used to treat all sorts of women’s issues related to menses, heavy bleeding, prolonged bleeding, infertility, fibroids, PCOS, and more. Well, that just about summed up my entire female issue checklist. So I chuckled my last laugh and went for it.

I thought I found the “most perfect” v-steaming chair. Obviously I misread the dimensions. I am sure this is how Alice in Wonderland felt.


Surprisingly I was not able to find any local spas or wellness centers that offered a v-steam. So I took matters into my own hands. I gathered up a list of all the essential herbs needed to create my very own v-steam. The organic herbs I chose seem to be the most widely used and include: Rosemary, Mugwort, Motherwort, Yarrow, Partridge Berry, Calendula, Lavender, and Rose Petals. Oh my…so, “how does the v-steam process work from home?”, you may ask. Well, if you are crafty you can cut a hole into an old wooden chair, use a garden slatted chair, or use the toilet. Oh yes, you read correctly, the toilet. Hmm, now I have you scrunching your face up don’t I? You must clean your toilet before you embark on this journey and then, wham-o!! You now have the perfect throne to sit upon and do your v-steam. After cleaning the toilet, turn the water off at the valve behind the toilet. Flush the toilet to empty most of the water in the bowl.

Meanwhile, let’s begin to cook your herbs.


Place your herbs in a large pot of gently boiling water, not a rapid boil. Cook them for approximately 10 minutes and then remove from heat, cover the pot with a lid and let the herbs steep for about 5-10 minutes. I pretested the size of my pot and it fits perfectly inside of my toilet and never even touches the bottom of the bowl. If your pot it too big then carefully transfer the water from the pot into a large bowl (heat safe). At this point you take the pot or bowl to the toilet and place it inside the toilet and be sure to put the seat down (not the lid). Your steam will be smoking hot so let it cool for a few minutes before sitting above it. This is the perfect time to grab a book and a cuppa tea and a blanket and set it near your v-steaming throne. Once the temperature tapers off a bit have a seat and wrap yourself in the blanket. This helps keep the steam inside and doing its job. You are going to sweat. But if the heat begins to feel painful open up the blanket to vent off some of the steam and cool things down a bit. You should v-steam for 20-30 minutes. It is best to do it at night so you can rest afterwards. Don’t v-steam and then go exercise or do dishes. Create a time that is all about you. You deserve it. Do not v-steam if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or have an IUD. Also, it is best to avoid v-steaming while on your period because it can get very messy. You have enough busy work in your life to have to worry about cleaning that up!

After you are done, take the pot or bowl to the kitchen and set it on a heat safe surface to let it cool overnight. You can then dispose of the liquid and herbs the next day.
