Questions to Ask Yourself:

After meeting with a potential doula, take some time to reflect on your impressions. Here are some questions to consider:

  1. Did you feel as if they were really listening to you during the interview?
  2. Did you feel comfortable with them?
  3. Did they seem compassionate?
  4. Did they ask you any questions?
  5. Did you feel they were interested in you and what you want?
  6. Did they communicate well?
  7. Did they seem knowledgeable?
  8. Did their views on pregnancy, childbirth, and medical care align with your own?
  9. Did they take the time to answer all of your questions, or did you feel rushed?
  10. Was it easy to make the appointment with them?
  11. Did you click with them?
  12. Do they make you feel safe and confident?

Choosing between experienced and newer doulas can be challenging. While newer doulas might bring fresh enthusiasm and current training, more experienced doulas often have a wealth of knowledge from attending numerous births.

A phone call can be a great way to conduct initial doula interview questions before scheduling an in-person meeting. This can save time and help you narrow down your choices. When you meet, double-check their answers to your previous questions to ensure consistency and honesty.

The most important thing in this process is finding a doula who makes you feel supported and understood. Whether you’re a first-time parent or have given birth before, having the right doula by your side can make all the difference.

Trust your instincts, ask the right questions, and take the time to reflect on your meetings. With the right preparation and support, you can have a positive and empowering birth experience.
