I always looked for ways to improve my immune system, especially after moving to the UK. Growing up in Brazil, I was accustomed to my nan making all sorts of natural remedies for every kind of issue imaginable, from colds to even broken bones(do not try this by the way!).

I know, that sounds a bit far-fetched, and it wasn’t always fun for me. However, she had this inherited knowledge of what to mix to not only cure ailments but also to prevent them.

This upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for natural health practices. Moving to the UK, with its different climate and lifestyle, made me even more conscious of maintaining a strong immune system.

I find myself constantly exploring new ways to support my health, blending my grandmother’s traditional wisdom with modern approaches to wellness.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook our body’s amazing defense mechanism until we catch a cold or feel run down.

I’ve gathered some of the best tips and tricks to help you enhance your immune system in the most natural and effective ways.

Nutrition

We can’t talk about immunity without starting with the basics: what we put into our bodies. Our diet plays a huge role in keeping our immune system strong and ready to fight off any invaders.

1. Load Up on Fruits and Veggies: Think of colorful fruits and vegetables as your immune system’s best friends. They are packed with essential vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin C, which is a superstar in immune support. Oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, and spinach are just a few examples.

2. Don’t Forget the Garlic: This pungent little bulb is a powerhouse when it comes to fighting infections. Garlic contains allicin, which has been shown to boost the disease-fighting response of white blood cells.

3. Spice It Up with Turmeric: Turmeric is not just for curry! This bright yellow spice contains curcumin, which has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Adding turmeric to your meals can give your immune system an extra boost.

Stay Active

Exercise isn’t just about getting in shape; it’s a crucial component of maintaining a robust immune system. I have a routine of Jiu Jitsu training 3x a week 2 hours a day and I feel great but walking for 30 minutes a few times a week will have you feeling amazing!

1. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Activities like walking, jogging, cycling, or even dancing can help increase circulation, allowing immune cells to move through your body more freely.

2. Yoga and Stretching: Yoga isn’t just great for flexibility and relaxation; it can also enhance your immune function. The gentle movements and deep breathing help reduce stress, which in turn can improve your immune response.

Sleep

Sleep is often the unsung hero of a healthy immune system. It’s when our bodies repair and regenerate.

1. Prioritize Quality Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a restful environment by keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Establishing a regular sleep schedule can also make a big difference.

2. Relax Before Bed: Try to wind down an hour before bedtime. Reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing mindfulness can help signal to your body that it’s time to rest.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is vital for all bodily functions, including your immune system.

1. Drink Plenty of Water: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water helps to flush out toxins and ensures that your cells get the nutrients they need.

2. Herbal Teas: Teas like green tea, echinacea, and elderberry are not only soothing but also packed with antioxidants that can boost your immune function.

Practice Mindfulness

Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your immune system, so finding ways to manage stress is crucial.

1. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Just a few minutes a day can help reduce stress and enhance your immune response. Apps like Headspace or Calm can be great guides if you’re new to meditation.

2. Connect with Loved Ones: Social connections and laughter can significantly reduce stress levels. So make time for friends and family, even if it’s just a quick phone call or video chat.

Go Outside

Spending time outside has numerous health benefits, including boosting your immune system.

1. Soak Up the Sun: Sunshine is the best natural source of Vitamin D, which is crucial for immune function. Try to spend at least 15-30 minutes outside each day.

2. Enjoy Nature: Being in nature can reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Whether it’s a hike in the woods or a walk in the park, make it a habit to get outside regularly.

Supplements

While a balanced diet should provide most of your nutrients, sometimes supplements can give your immune system an extra boost.

1. Vitamin C and D: These vitamins are well-known for their immune-boosting properties. If you’re not getting enough from your diet or sun exposure, consider a supplement.

2. Probiotics: A healthy gut is a cornerstone of a strong immune system. Probiotics can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, supporting overall immune function.

These natural and effective ways to boost your immune system are easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Remember, it’s all about consistency and making small, manageable changes. Your body will thank you for it!
