I want to share with you a deeply personal and rather unsettling experience I had with the copper IUD, also known as the copper coil. I consider myself someone who strives to live a natural, balanced lifestyle to the best of my capacity.
I try and choose mostly organic foods, natural skincare products, and holistic health practices. So, when it came to birth control, I thought the copper IUD would be the perfect fit—no hormones, long-lasting, and supposedly side-effect-free. Boy, was I wrong!

My journey with the copper coil began about a few years ago when I moved to the UK. Initially, everything seemed fine. The insertion was uncomfortable, but I was prepared for that.
What I wasn’t prepared for was the cascade of health issues that followed. Within a few months, I started experiencing fatigue, brain fog, excruciating abdominal pain, and anxiety.
At first, I linked these symptom to stress and the demands of daily life. However, as the symptoms worsened, I began to suspect that something more serious was at play.

After countless doctor visits, blood tests, and a lot of frustration, I stumbled upon information about copper toxicity.
It hit me like a ton of bricks—I was 1000% sure that my body was rejecting the copper in the IUD. My body had been screaming at me, and it was about time I listened.
Copper toxicity is a real and serious condition. While copper is an essential trace mineral necessary for various bodily functions, too much of it can wreak havoc on your health.
Symptoms can include the ones I experienced, as well as nausea, dizziness, and an overall sense of malaise.

My research revealed that certain individuals have a lower tolerance for copper, which can lead to an accumulation of the metal in their bodies when exposed to excess amounts, such as from a copper IUD.
What frustrates me the most is the lack of awareness and testing for copper tolerance before prescribing this device. It’s incredibly irresponsible to assume that one-size-fits-all when it comes to something as personal and intricate as our reproductive health.
Had there been a simple test or even a discussion about the potential risks, I might have avoided this entire ordeal.

Ripping that coil out at home was a decision born out of sheer desperation and unbearable discomfort. My story isn’t some manual—it’s a raw, infuriating fight to reclaim control over my own body.
No regrets here, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat! Once that copper coil was out, I felt the difference almost immediately.
It took months for my body to detox and recover, but I’m finally starting to feel like myself again. This whole ordeal has been a blazing reminder of how crucial it is to listen to our bodies and fiercely advocate for our health.
This situation is yet another glaring example of how women’s health is blatantly disregarded. If these devices were for men, you can bet there would be mountains of research and meticulous care before they were ever approved.

It’s outrageous, and it’s high time we demand better. Our health and well-being deserve nothing less. To all my readers considering or currently using a copper IUD, please be mindful and informed.
If you start experiencing unexplained symptoms, don’t hesitate to explore the possibility of copper toxicity. Your health is paramount, and sometimes, the natural option isn’t always the best option for everyone.
