It definitely makes morning easier when you are brushing through smooth, tangle-free hair, rather than a big tangled mess – especially when it comes to our two 7-year-old girls. As any mom with long hair or curly-haired kiddos knows, detangling can sometimes be a challenge, especially when thick curls are involved!

Our oldest daughter has had thick, curly hair since she was a toddler, and it has been an adventure finding the best ways to keep those curls healthy, happy, and easy to manage. So today, I’m sharing our Hibiscus Hair Detangler Spray recipe—a natural, DIY detangler that’s been a lifesaver in our home!

This homemade hair detangler recipe makes around 4-6 ounces, just enough to keep on hand for wash days and those daily hair-brushing sessions. Hibiscus is the star ingredient here, known for its ability to add moisture and promote healthy shine.
The spray is perfect for damp hair, giving you an extra boost when it comes to battling those stubborn tangles. It’s not just for kids with curly hair, if you have a little girl (or even a long haired boy) with straight hair that is very thick and full then I’m sure you know the same struggle when it comes to natural hair care.
Ingredients for Homemade Detangler Spray
Why Hibiscus, Glycerine, and Conditioner?
Hibiscus flowers are packed with natural benefits for your hair. They’re rich in amino acids, which help strengthen and nourish, making your child’s hair more resilient to tangles. The infusion of natural oils also helps to keep the hair smooth, adding a healthy shine.

Vegetable glycerine is a powerhouse when it comes to locking in moisture, which is key to reducing frizz and making combing easier and helping reduce frizzy hair, especially on those days when hair seems to have a mind of its own!
For the drops of essential oil, you can use whatever you prefer. Tea tree oil is useful in repelling headlice, so if you pick that then the spray doubles up as a natural lice repellant too. Lavender oil is great for scent, or ylang ylang oil if your child has a dry scalp.
Adding a small amount of conditioner to the mix turns this spray into a leave-in conditioner as well, giving it an extra detangling boost.
With all-natural ingredients, you don’t have to worry about exposing your kids to any toxic ingredients or harsh chemicals. Instead, you’re using simple, effective components that nurture beautiful, healthy hair.
We would suggest that you take care with which conditioner you use for the recipe, of course. Make sure you’re using a natural conditioner, which has ingredients that you’re happy to use on your daughter’s hair.

You will also want a small glass spray bottle, for easy spraying onto the hair.
How to Make Your Own Natural Detangler – Hibiscus Hair Detangling Spray
Follow along with the step by step below to make your own diy kids detangler spray, which is. non toxic and free from harsh chemicals.

Homemade All Natural Hair Detangler Spray
Tame those tangles naturally! This homemade Hibiscus Hair Detangler Spray makes combing out stubborn knots a breeze, leaving your little one's curls soft, shiny, and oh-so-manageable—no harsh chemicals required.
Materials
- Hibiscus flowers
- 1 tablespoon conditioner (I love using a natural conditioner for this!)
- 1/2 teaspoon glycerine (vegetable glycerin)
- 1/4 teaspoon hibiscus-infused oil
- Water
- Essential oils (optional)
- An empty spray bottle
Instructions
- Prepare the Hibiscus-Infused Oil: Add hibiscus flowers into a glass jar, filling it about ¾ of the way full. Cover the flowers completely with a carrier oil of your choice. Olive oil works well for this! Let it sit for a few weeks, shaking it every now and then. Then strain the flowers to keep only the infused oil.
- Make Hibiscus Tea: Steep hibiscus flowers in hot water for about 10 minutes to make hibiscus tea. Strain the tea into a glass jar to remove any flower particles.
- Mix Essential Oils: Add a few drops of essential oils to the hibiscus-infused oil. Lavender essential oil is lovely for both the scent and its nourishing benefits, but you can use any favorite essential oil you have on hand. This step is optional but adds an amazing fragrance and additional benefits.
- Combine All Ingredients: In a glass spray bottle, mix the hibiscus tea, infused oil, glycerine, and conditioner. Add enough water to get to about 4-6 ounces total. Shake the bottle well until everything is nicely combined. Make sure to shake before each use as natural ingredients tend to separate.
Notes
Essential Oils Are Optional: Feel free to leave them out if your child has sensitive skin or if you'd rather keep it very simple.
Carrier Oil Options: Any carrier oil will work for the infusion. Olive oil is easy to find and does wonders for dry hair, but sweet almond oil or jojoba oil are also great alternatives.
For Lighter Hair: This works wonders for brown hair, adding a slight red tint that enhances natural shine. However, if your little one has blonde hair, you might notice a slight reddish tint that will wash out. If you’re worried about stains, you can skip the hibiscus tea.
This spray is for external use only, do not consume.
You can also add a simple white label to the spray bottle, so you don’t mix it up with your other homemade products.

How to Use Your Homemade Detangler Spray
To use, simply spray on to damp hair before brushing or combing. I like to use a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush to gently work through any tangles.
This detangler is excellent for curly hair, providing moisture and making those curls soft and manageable for the rest of the day. It also works beautifully on long hair, keeping it smooth and tangle-free without any of the harsh chemicals often found in some of the store-bought detangling products.

This Hibiscus Hair Detangler Spray has become a must-have in our daily hair care routine. It’s such a great product for making hair brushing less of a struggle and more of a bonding moment with our little girls.
Plus, we love that it’s made with natural products that are gentle on their hair and skin. Whether your child has curly hair, long hair, or just a few stubborn tangles, this natural hair detangler spray will make a huge difference. Please do note as mentioned in the recipe card above that this spray is best for brown hair, and you need to be careful with light blonde hair due to the natural color of hibiscus. Both our girls have dark brown or black. hair, so for those it works great.

So give it a try—make a small batch and see how your little one’s hair responds. You’ll love how manageable and smooth their hair feels, and you might even find yourself using it on your own hair too! No more tears over tangles—just happy, healthy shine and easy, stress-free brushing.
