This melt and pour soap project is perfect for beginners and makes a great gift, especially with Mother’s Day around the corner.

Why Make Your Own Soap?

Crafting your own soap at home allows you to control what goes into your beauty products. This jasmine and rose petal soap uses natural ingredients like shea butter, jasmine and rose essential oils, and dried rose petals, offering a more skin-friendly alternative to commercial soaps filled with harsh chemicals.

Another great thing about this DIY project is its simplicity. There’s no need to handle lye or worry about the saponification process, which is involved in more traditional soap making methods like cold and hot process recipes.

This recipe uses a shea butter melt and pour base, which simplifies the process and is perfect for those who want to make beautiful soap without the hassle.

The benefits of roses are plentiful, too so it’s a great choice for your natural soap recipe. Rose has long been celebrated not only for its intoxicating fragrance but also for its extensive benefits in skincare. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, rose is excellent for hydrating and soothing the skin, making it appear smoother and more radiant. It also offers anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and calm conditions such as eczema and rosacea.

Rose is also known for its astringent qualities that help tighten pores and tone the skin. On top of its skin benefits, the scent of rose is renowned for its ability to uplift the mood, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of well-being, making rose-scented soaps a favorite in both aromatherapy and natural beauty treatments.

So let’s get into making this DIY rose soap recipe with just a few easy steps.

What You’ll Need to Make Your Rose Petal Soap

Before we dive into the recipe for these handmade soaps, let’s talk about the molds.

While we used these really cute butterfly molds to capture the essence of spring and add that whimsical touch, feel free to use any soap molds you have on hand. The beauty of melt and pour soap is that it’s incredibly versatile – any shape will work!

For this recipe, you’ll also need a few tools and ingredients:

Step-by-Step Homemade Jasmine and Rose Petal Soap Recipe

Here’s how you go about Preparing the Soap. We’ll walk you through the step-by-step process. First, you’ll need to melt the soap base. We used the microwave, but understand if you prefer to use a double boiler we have provided instructions for that too.

We suggest splitting your soap mixture in half and coloring half with your red mica to give you some pink soap, and leaving some plain white, if you want a variety in your butterfly soaps. If you don’t want to color your soaps with the mica powder, then skip that step and you don’t need to split the mixture in that case.

Melt the Soap Base

Cut the shea butter soap base into 1-inch cubes. Place half of them in your microwave-safe measuring cup and heat in the microwave on high for 30-second intervals. Stir between each interval until the soap is completely melted.

If you don’t have a microwave or prefer not to use one, you can easily melt your soap base using a double boiler method. This traditional method allows for gentle and even heating, which is great for preserving the delicate fragrances of jasmine and rose essential oils. Here’s how you can do it:

Melting Soap Base Using a Double Boiler

  1. Set Up Your Double Boiler: If you don’t have an actual double boiler, you can create one by placing a heat-proof bowl or smaller pot on top of a larger pot filled with a few inches of water. Make sure the bottom of the top pot or bowl does not touch the water.
  2. Heat Water: Bring the water in the bottom pot to a simmer over medium heat. The steam from the simmering water will gently heat the upper bowl or pot.
  3. Melt the Soap Base: Place your soap base cubes in the upper part of the double boiler. Allow the soap to melt slowly, stirring occasionally with a wooden craft stick. The key is to keep the heat low and steady to avoid burning the soap.
  4. Proceed as Usual: Once the soap is fully melted, you can proceed with the rest of the recipe—adding your essential oils, mica powder, and dried rose petals as directed.
  5. Using a double boiler might take a bit longer than a microwave, but it gives you more control over the temperature, which can be crucial for maintaining the integrity of the natural ingredients in your homemade soap. Plus, it’s a more traditional approach that aligns well with a natural, “crunchy” lifestyle.

Add Fragrance and Petals

Once melted, add 5 drops of jasmine essential oil and 8 drops of rose essential oil to the soap mixture.

Stir well to distribute the fragrance of the jasmine and rose oil evenly. Then, mix in 1 tablespoon of crushed dried rose petals.

Pour and Set

Pour the mixture into your molds. If you see any air bubbles forming on the top, spritz them lightly with rubbing alcohol. Allow the soap to set and harden for 1-2 hours.

Repeat for the Second Batch

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the remaining soap base. This time, after adding the essential oils, stir in the red mica powder until you achieve a uniform pink color.

Unmold and Enjoy

Once the soap has hardened, gently unmold each bar. Voilà! You now have your very own jasmine and rose petal soap bars.

This jasmine and rose petal soap recipe is vegan-friendly as it uses shea butter melt and pour soap base, rather than a goat milk soap base, and does not contain any animal-derived products. The other ingredients, including jasmine and rose essential oils and dried rose petals, are also vegan. This makes it a wonderful choice for those following a vegan lifestyle or anyone looking for cruelty-free beauty options.

homemade rose soap

Once your homemade jasmine and rose petal soaps are ready, you can use them just like any regular soap for washing your hands, body, and even your face if your skin is not too sensitive to essential oils.

To ensure your soaps last as long as possible, store them in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. A soap dish with proper drainage or a breathable cotton bag works perfectly to keep them dry between uses, preventing them from becoming soft and mushy.

These homemade soaps typically last several months if stored correctly. However, as they contain natural ingredients and no harsh preservatives, it’s best to use them within a few months to enjoy the maximum benefits and freshness of the essential oils and dried petals.

Homemade jasmine and rose petal soap not only works as a luxurious addition to your bath routine but also makes a thoughtful, handmade gift for loved ones. Its natural ingredients and enchanting fragrance offer a small escape to a rose garden, right in the comfort of your home.

There are so many ways to experiment with soap making, so the next time you get to making this soap, once you have the regular recipe down, you can experiment with different scents and dried petals, such as lavender buds or rose geranium, and even add ingredients like rosehip seed oil for added skincare benefits. The possibilities are endless, and the results are always uniquely yours.

Happy soap making!
